MANDAS, Sardinia / "A cent'annus" / October 21, 2008
SARDINIA is an island in Italy famous for its centenarians. People studying aging, longevity and gerontology have been coming to Sardinia to meet some of the centenarians who live there.
One arrives in Cagliari and travels about 60 kms by car, train or bus to Mandas. Right in the heart of Sardinia is a stretch of about 30 kms of road that connects Laconi and Orroli.
Three university students from Laconi - Orroli region who have been brought up in the grandparents' countryside have formed a cultural group they call "A cent'annus" and thus was born the 'Centenarians Road' Tour idea. For around 500 Euros, a couple can go for a 4 nights/3 days tour with bed, breakfast, dinner and overnight stay. The highlight will be time you spend with some of the eight centenarians who live along the Centenarians Road.
Brains behind the idea are three university students Giulia Carta, aged 26; Carla Mereu 19 years old and Pamela Pingiori, 26 years old who tell you:
"Since we were children we have loved listening to the stories of our grandparents. Now that we are a bit older we would like to share this heritage with others who are interested in traditional and magical stories and would like to experience our culture and learn our history.
In order to pay for our studies, we worked in different tourist places and through our experiences we developed an alternative approach to tourism, involving closer contact with the island and its people.
We created "Centenarians' Road" and founded the cultural group "A cent'annus" that manages and organises all the routes.
