NIGERIA: Telecom operators urged to address concerns of the elderly

Ernest Ndukwe, Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission, announcing the latest teledensity figures recently during the Consumer Parliament held at Ogba, Ikeja in Lagos, frowned at the attitude of the telecom service providers who he said did not provide enough customer care. Ernest Ndukwe The regulatory body held a consultative forum with the service providers where it directed them to submit within 30 days, their proposal on how to take care of the physically challenged and the elderly in service provisioning within their networks. Engr. Ndukwe, who was represented at the forum by the Director of Legal Services of NCC, Mr. Steven Andzenge, said the elderly and the physically challenged are estimated at 25 percent of the population and “this calls for attention and we must rise up to the challenge of providing services that address the needs and concerned of this group”, he said. He said the Nigerian Communication Act 2003 has adequate provisions for this group with Section 1(h) stating the responsibilities of the operators to “ensure that the needs of the disabled and the elderly persons are taken into consideration in the provision of communications services”. The commission is set to ensure that operators implement programmes and actions specifically designed to address the concerns of the physically challenged and the elderly, he said. © 2008 THE SUN PUBLISHING LTD
