MALAYSIA: Long queues but no cash for Selangor senior citizens

. KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (The Star), August 23, 2008: By Elan Perumal MANY senior citizens in Selangor have been queuing up at the counters of the Bangunan Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah after they were made to believe that the Pakatan Rakyat led-state government was offering a RM500 cash allowance to them. The elderly people have been flocking the counters at the state secretariat building since the beginning of the month after receiving information that was circulating through by word of mouth and over the Internet. Although the number of people going to the state secretariat had reduced in recent weeks, a state official said the office continued to receive telephone calls enquiring about the one-off RM500 allowance that never existed. “Our staff are busy answering calls and the public often ask how their parents or elderly relatives can obtain the RM500,’’ he said. Rodziah: We are trying to come out with some kind of scheme for senior citizens. Earlier, the official said there had been people, especially senior citizens, who had made trips from as far as Kajang. He said some of these people came to the state secretariat after travelling on three buses and felt cheated and bitter. “There are some 260,000 senior citizens in Selangor and it does not make sense for the state government to give RM500 to everyone. “The state will have to spend a whooping RM130mil in order to give out RM500 to each of the senior citizens,’’ he said. According to the official, there could be a possible mix-up with an insurance scheme offered under the Takaful Senior Citizen scheme. He said the scheme offered RM500 funeral expenses for the families and a subsequent RM3,000 in the event of the death of a senior citizen. “They can register for this scheme at the various district offices and local councils,’’ he added. State welfare committee chairman Rodziah Ismail confirmed that no such promise had been made to the public and the rumours were started by those with their own agenda. She advised the people to stop circulating the misleading information so that senior citizens would not feel cheated. “The good news is that we are trying to come out with some kind of scheme for the senior citizens but nothing has been finalised,’’ she said.
