INDIA: Senior citizens for austere marriages

Campaign against wastrels, show of riches SRINAGAR (GK News Network), August 8, 2008: Srinagar City Senior Citizens’ Forum (SCSCF) has appealed to the people to observe simplicity and austerity while solemnizing marriages. The Forum, at a meeting held here today with its president Muzamil Khan in chair, urged religious, political and social leaders to launch a sustained campaign against wastrels and vulgar show of wealth and riches in marriage ceremonies. It stressed the need for guest control, reduction in Wazwan varieties, restrictions on extravagant decoration, bursting of crackers and other wastrels. The speakers on the occasion regretted that the well-known religious and political leaders had maintained silence over this social issue notwithstanding the fact that the Kashmir Valley was facing a lot of shortage of essential commodities. “By ignoring moral and social issues, the leaders of Kashmiri nation were shying away from their vital responsibility. They owe it to their people to launch a sustained campaign against all social evils that have eaten into very the vitals of society for several decades,” they said. The Forum has strongly condemned the economic blockade to Valley by extremists urged government to take effective steps to provide adequate security on Jammu-Srinagar highway and ensure smooth supply of essential commodities to the Valley.
