INDIA: No raise in retirement age in Uttar Pradesh

LUCKNOW, Uttar Pradesh (The Times of India), August 30, 2008: The government of Uttar Pradesh state has refuted news published in a section of the media regarding increase in retirement age of state employees from 60 to 62 years. Terming the news as baseless and misleading, a government spokesperson said that UP government was the first state government which had accepted the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission despite its financial constraints and implemented them keeping in view the difficulties of the employees in the face of spiralling prices. The spokesperson said that since the government was also committed to safeguarding the interests of the younger generation and unemployed people, an increase in retirement age of state employees would block employment opportunities for the youth. Therefore, there was no proposal before the government to increase the retirement age of state employees, he added. Copyright © 2008 Bennett Coleman & Co. Ltd.
