GUAM: Golden Years Health Fair To Empower 'Manamko,' Their Care Providers

GUAM (Pacific News Center), August 28, 2008: Local senior citizens and their care providers are on track to learn disease prevention, better ways of managing existing chronic diseases, and a variety of new things they can do to improve their quality of life through a combination of presentations and exhibitions set to take place at the “Golden Years!” Senior Health Fair. The big event happens August 28 at Micronesia Mall Expo Hall. Over 600 seniors will be bussed to the health fair. But anyone interested in senior health care is encourage to attend. “At a time when society's youngest senior citizens came of age during the ideal-striving counterculture movement of the 1960's, it's no longer surprising to see the so-called 'elderly' taking charge of their health and enjoying active retirement,” said Sharla Montvel-Cohen, Executive Producer of GU M.D. and Managing Director of Lotus Media Services, the company that produces the half-hour program for broadcast on FOX6-TV. Last fall, Montvel-Cohen wrote and produced a special edition of GU M.D. called “Forever Young”. The half hour focused on islanders 50 and older who enjoy life to the fullest by actively managing their health through exercise, diet, family time, personal passions and spirituality. That special episode will play back at the GU M.D. booth during the “Golden Years!” Senior Health Fair today. Approximately 30 vendors are expected to participate in the event – including pharmacies, home care providers, divisions of the Department of Public Health, health care vendors, and health care professionals.
