USA: Highest British Gerontology Research Award for Director of Barshop Institute

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (San Antonio Business Journal), July 18, 2008: The British Society for Research on Aging has awarded San Antonio researcher Arlan G. Richardson its highest honor, the Lord Cohen Medal for Services to Gerontology. This award makes him only one of eight individuals since 1982 to be named a pioneer in gerontology. He is only the second American to receive this honor. Richardson is the founder and director of the Sam and Ann Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He received the medal during the society’s annual scientific meeting in Brighton, England. He is also a professor in the Department of Cellular and Structural Biology at the Health Science Center and holds the Methodist Hospital Foundation Chair in Aging Studies and Research. His research focuses on the role of oxidative stress in aging and age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s and cancer. Using novel genetically modified mouse models, he is directly testing whether reduced oxidative stress makes mice younger and live longer. The University of Texas Health Science Center trains physicians, dentists, nurses, scientists and allied health professionals each year. Source: L.
