GHANA: Seniors feted during Republic Day events

ACCRA, Ghana (Ghana News Agency), July 5, 2008: Dormaa Municipal and Dormaa East District Assemblies in Brong Ahafo held separate get togethers for senior citizens drawn from all communities in the area as part of activities to commemorate Ghana’s 48th Republic Day. Highlights of the events included food, drinks, music and optional speeches by the senior folks on their experiences in the past. At Dormaa Ahenkro, Mr. Attah Amponsah, Municipal Chief Executive, said the senior citizen’s day presented a unique opportunity for the aged to reflect and share their rich experiences with the younger generation. He lauded President Agyekum Kufuor for giving prominence to the day and urged the senior citizens to continue to support the government. Mr. Amponsah asked those above 70 years in the Municipality to present themselves to the Assembly to be registered free under the national health insurance scheme. The senior citizens on their part urged the government to put premium on the cocoa industry to make life more meaningful to farmers. At Wamfie, the Dormaa East district capital, Squadron Leader Ben Anane Asamoah (Rtd), District Chief Executive, appealed to the aged to place their experiences at the doorsteps of the youth. He charged the senior citizens to assist the youth to engage in agriculture especially maize production to feed the numerous poultry farms in the area.
