CZECH REPUBLIC: Workers 'face age discrimination'

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (Vedior),
June 13, 2008:

Age discrimination in the workplace in the Czech Republic is commonplace, according to a new study.

Lucie Vidovicova, a sociologist and researcher at Masaryk University, took a poll and found that 92 per cent of Czech respondents believe age is a factor in employment, the Prague Post reports. She spoke to one fifty-something man whose job enquiries were all being met with knock-backs. He tried creating a new CV where he changed his age but nothing else and received several job offers from places where he had previously been rejected.

"Now he has a job. But he says he cannot understand why it was so difficult," Ms Vidovicova told the newspaper.

Her research follows a report from the European Commission's directorate general for employment, which found that only Latvia is worse than the Czech Republic for age discrimination.

In related news, European Union member states have recently come to an agreement on shared labour laws.
