Chris Noth is not a morning man. he missed his first round-table at the press junket today. Yesterday was worse: according to one anxious publicist, he sat through a series of interviews saying next to nothing, apparently so annoyed by his own inability to come up with amusing answers that he just sat and fumed. Of course, that's the kind of lone-wolf intensity we expect of Big, Carrie Bradshaw's tantalising Mr Right in Sex and the City. And who can imagine Mike Logan, Noth's character in Law & Order: Criminal Intent, doing the early shift?
"Press junkets! I think we should do away with them," Noth rumbles over lunch after his second morning at the coalface. That's Noth rhyming with "both", not "moth", although he's not the sort of person who expects to be called mister. He swears he has been asked the same four questions a dozen times that day; there just isn't any more to say about any of it. He growls into his lemonade. "Don't you think that a movie, if it's good, is going to find its way anyway to the people? That's how it used to work."
Perhaps it did. Personally, I doubt there was a golden age of film publicity, but a lot of things have gone to hell in a handbasket in Chris Noth's view of the world: movies, the news media, architecture in New York, the live music scene, the American presidency, the American polity, the polar icecaps and the very air we breathe. It's not that he's a fogey. At 53, he is sleek, energetic and full of the enthusiasm of new fatherhood. It's just that he has, as he puts it, "my own cloudy weather inside that I sometimes deal with".
