The north-central coastal province of Nghe An currently has 1,064 centenarians, 251 of whom are exactly 100 years old, says a recent report. Of the total number, 69 percent are females.
Besides some districts like Dien Chau, Thanh Chuong, Ki Son with large numbers of elderly people, the north-western mountainous district of Chuong Duong takes the lead in the ranking with 131 centenarians.
Some have been awarded medals for their 70-year service to the Communist Party of Viet Nam, namely 103-year-old Tran Thi Hoi and Nguyen Thi Ham in Thanh An Commune and Thanh Duong Commune of Thanh Chuong District, 103-year-old Nguyen Thi Hanh in Nghia Thai Commune of Tan Ky District, and 102-year-old Nguyen Thi Thin in Hung Xuan Commune of Hung Nguyen District.
During the early days of the Lunar New Year or Tet, in the traditional spirit, local authorities joined hands with the Viet Nam Association of the Elderly and local residents to hold some cozy and solemn parties to congratulate them on their longevities.Source: SGGP
