BHOPAL,
Madhya Pradesh (NDTV),
February 11, 2008:
Senior citizens in Bhopal have signed up to donate their organs after death so that others may live on.
They say this will be their last contribution to society.
The move comes as a slap in the face of the likes of Dr Amit Kumar who trade in human organs and people's desperation.
Fifty members of a senior citizens association in Bhopal have registered so their vital organs can be donated when they die and those in need do not get caught up in red tape and legal delays.
Organised by the Varishth Nagrik Mandal Senior Citizens Association), the voluntary organization is helping its members fulfill their last wishes.
''We do not know what will happen to us when we die. I am feeling very satisfied today that at least my body will be of some use after I die,'' said Vijaya Bapat, Senior Citizen. That sentiment perhaps will be their biggest legacy.
Even after serving society all their lives, they still want to make another sacrifice even in death.
''This will be our last contribution to the society so that the young generation appreciates our usefulness,'' said H K Saraswat, President, Varishth Nagrik Mandal.
A small group of senior citizens in Bhopal have shown the way. Illegal trade of human organs will stop taking place in India if more such people will come forward to donate their bodies.
