January 22, 2008:
On Grandmother’s Day in Poland, a public opinion poll reveals that 60% of Poles say they owe their moral principles, religious faith and the feeling of being loved to their grandparents.
Other noteworthy attributes cited by the respondents are knowledge of family history, conscientiousness, diligence and also love for their country.
Material gains, such as a bequeathed flat or inheritance money, were among the least important factors mentioned.
In a research study conducted by Harald Euler a sample of 2,000 respondents aged between 16 and 80 were questioned on their relationships with their grandparents or grandchildren. Most of them said they had a stronger bond with the maternal grandmother.
It is Grandmother’s Day today in Poland, followed by Grandfather’s Day tomorrow. Although their exact origins are uncertain, Grandmother’s and Grandfather’s Day can be traced back to the 60s and 70s.
Other countries, including Germany and the United States, also celebrate Grandmother’s and Grandfather’s Day.
A special national bank holiday is also celebrated in Japan to honor elderly people in the country. The holiday, known as Respect for the Aged Day is held on the third Monday of September.
