GERMANY: Woman Aged 64 Gives Birth To Her First Child
MUNICH (Agence France Presse), December 3, 2007:
A German woman aged 64 has given birth to her first child, a healthy baby girl, achieving a national record.
The baby was born by caesarian section yesterday and weighed 2kg. It was her first child after years of unfruitful attempts and false pregnancies.
The child was conceived with ovules donated by a 25-year-old and the sperm of the new mother’s husband, also aged 64.
“Mother and child are doing well,” said Elias Karam at the Aschaffenburg clinic in southern Bavaria, the online site of Der Spiegel reported.
The ovule operation was conducted abroad because it is banned in Germany, the report said.
“This woman came to me because she needed my help. As a doctor, I gave it without question,” said Elias Karam, the doctor who delivered the baby.
At the end of 2006, a Spanish woman of 67 gave birth to twins, pipping the record made the year before by another twin-bearer, this time a 66-year-old Romanian.
