VIET NAM: President Urges More Services, Care for Elderly
HA NOI (Viet Nam News), September 27, 2006:
President Nguyen Minh Triet has called on ministries and organisations involved in providing care for the elderly to improve their services.
In his letter, the President highlights an old Vietnamese proverb that says "when people eat fruit, they should remember those who planted the trees".
The entire Party, people and army are always proud of and grateful for the major contributions of the elder people in the struggle for national independence and re-unification and in the current phase of national construction and defence.
He says no one can avoid getting old. The Vietnamese elderly have promoted the traditions of patriotism, solidarity, heroic fighting and creative working. The aged have continued their efforts in building the country and set example for younger generations, thus contributing to creating a prosperous nation and an equitable, democratic and civilised society.
The President writes he wishes the elderly will further promote The Elderly - Bright Examples and Setting Bright Examples, Developing New Ideas for the Motherland emulation movements.
They should continue to be the mainstays of the Party and administration and play a central role in building and developing national unity.
The President writes he wishes the elderly good health and happiness and hopes the Viet Nam Association of the Elderly continues and boosts effective activities in carrying out their duty of taking care of the aged.
Viet Nam’s Elderly Fund
A fund for taking care of the elderly has been set up under a decision made by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung. The fund, run by the Viet Nam Association of the Elderly, will be created with the help and donations from individuals and organisations inside and outside the country.
