SINGAPORE (ChannelNews Asia), August 19, 2006:
The Golden Opportunities or GO! Fund has committed another S$1.1 million to engage senior citizens. The money will go to various initiatives run by the National Library Board, the Singapore Scouts Association, Girl Guides Singapore, the Health Promotion Board and the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre.
Mrs. Yu-Foo Yee Shoon, Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports revealed this.
The initiatives include ones to promote intergenerational bonding through letter writing, healthy eating for seniors and senior volunteerism.
Most of the programmes are being organised and run by some 700 senior volunteers and aim to reach out to some 28,000 beneficiaries.
Mrs Yu-Foo says she hopes such initiatives will help the seniors lead more active lives.
"The young old and those active old - what we want is that they should not withdraw from society after their semi-retirement or retirement. So they should do something to help themselves. We need to really develop a self-reliance and also a right attitude towards retirement," said Mrs Yu-Foo,
