SRI LANKA: Rs.10 Million Allotted for Developing Elders' Homes

COLOMBO (Colombo Page), July 2, 2006: President Mahinda Rajapaksa has allocated Rs. 10 million to develop elders' homes in the country. Douglas Devananda, the Minister of Social Services and Social Welfare, had requested the allocation. Earlier, Rs. 9 million were granted. Now the funds have been raised to Rs. 19 million to construct new buildings and to repair current elders’ homes. Sri Lanka's elderly population is growing fast and the problems of the senior citizens are expected to grow by 2025.
