PORTUGAL: Elderly Man Blows Up Block in Revenge on Landlord

LISBON, Portugal (Reuters - All Headline News), July 31, 2006: An elderly man in Portugal takes revenge on his landlord by blowing up his apartment, causing part of the five-floor Lisbon block to collapse and catch fire. Neighbors reported the 80-year-old man had threatened to pour petrol on his floor and set it alight after being evicted by his landlord. Carlos Pinto, a fireman with the Lisbon fire brigade, tells Reuters, "He had threatened neighbors that he would blow up the place if he ever got kicked out... I guess he kept his promise." One neighbor says he saw the man with a bottle of petrol right before the explosion. The elderly man suffered severe burns to his body. No other injuries were reported.
