U.K.: Annie Knight, 111, is Oldest Woman in Scotland

The Birthday Girl: Annie Knight (Photo: BBC News) ABERDEEN (The Glasgow Daily Record), June 7, 2006: Scotland's oldest woman reached the grand old age of 111 yesterday. Now the fervent nationalist wants the all-Britain title. Annie Knight spent her big birthday yesterday with her family and friends. Her son, Bill, 85, who also lives in Aberdeen, said: "She has a bowl of porridge every morning and has never touched a drop of alcohol in her life - maybe that's the secret. "It's such an achievement and she might even be the oldest in the UK now as well, which would be amazing. I'm sure she'd be very proud to take the crown of Britain's oldest person to Scotland." The Guinness Book of Records are searching to find the longestliving person in Britain after 112-year-old Judy Ingamells, of Enfield, Middlesex, died in March. Guinness's Sam Knights said: "Mrs Knight has done amazingly well living as long as she has, and her family has been in touch with us. We're in the process of researching who is the oldest woman in the UK at the moment, but Mrs Knight is definitely in with a good chance." Born in Glasgow in June 1895, Annie moved to Aberdeen as a child and married William in 1918. She worked in a department store during the day but taught piano at the family's Belmont Road home for many years. The strong SNP supporter, who campaigned for the party until just a few years ago, said the highlight of her life so far was seeing Scotland get a parliament.
