Retirement couple in Torerevieja, Spain
MADRID (PropertyInSpain.Net), May 5, 2006:
More British people over 50 are planning to retire to Spain attracted by lower retirement costs and its sunshine lifestyle.
One in five Britons and a third of Germans are considering retiring to Spain, according to a new survey as online specialists PropertyinSpain.Net report records numbers of inquiries from would-be buyers.
The survey, carried out by property consultants King Sturge, showed 22 per cent of Britons said they were considering moving to Spain, while 35 per cent Germans said they had considered the same option.
After interviewing 800 Britons and 800 Germans over 50 it appears there is also a surge in the numbers of people planning to retire in Spain because of the high standards of healthcare and social services facilities - often part of packages offered by many estate agents in Spain.
Martin Zuchner, head of the King Sturge office in Madrid, said he believed there was a new-found optimism in Germany about retiring abroad with 44 per cent of Britons and 34 per cent of Germans claiming the high health standards would attract them to retire to Spain.
"We are currently receiving record numbers of inquiries from British people, many of whom tell us they are buying for their retirement, with a few years of family holidays in their new Spanish homes before they make the final decision on retirement. No sooner have we fixed them up with a lovely apartment or villa, their friends are on the phone seeking their own possible retirement home in the sun", said Terry Walker of PropertyInSpain.Net.
He claimed the sudden increase, starting in February this year, could be due to the high cost of retirement living in the UK and Germany and the depressing political scenarios in both countries. The amenities, sunshine and low cost lifestyle make Spain a big attraction for retirement.
The firm recently launched its Libertad tax break and co-ownership buying option and estimates 25 per cent of the 550 UK people who have already registered for a property in Spain are including the purchase in their retirement
