USA: Foster Grandparent Program Gets $2,000
ROSEBURG, DOUGLAS COUNTY, OREGAN (The News Review), October 31, 2005:
Pacific Power's PacifiCorps Foundation for Learning has awarded the Douglas County Foster Grandparent Program a $2,000 grant to support seniors helping children.
The program allows seniors to serve as mentors for youth, tutoring them in reading or math and reinforcing positive behavior.
The program also aims to help low-income seniors remain physically and mentally active while enhancing their self-esteem.
Foster grandparents currently spend time with about 1,000 children in Douglas County's public schools and nonprofits. Program representatives hope to expand that reach to serve at least 500 children in Coos County.
