INDIA: State Governor Concerned About Plight of Elders
CHENNAI (NEWS TODAY), October 7, 2005:
The present situation of senior citizens is definitely not appreciable what with a few even sending their elders to Old Age Homes, Tamil Nadu State Governor Surjit Singh Barnala said today.
"More and more aged persons are experiencing the pain in heart of having given their blood and sweat for the growth of their offspring and their present stature of being abandoned and left uncared for by their own sons for whose welfare they had toiled," the Governor said.
He was addressing a ceremony organised by HelpAge India to present the Social Responsibility Awards to corporates, schools and individuals for their unstinted support extended for the cause of elders.
The gradual split in the joint family system and the poor economic status of families had affected the life of the elderly, Barnala noted. A closer look at the difficulties face by the elderly people reveal that they were not given due importance and respect by the younger generation, he said. Appealing to the younger generation for the change of attitude towards the elders, he said, 'Younger people should take care of the elderly people, be kind to them and cater to their needs.'
In India alone, the number of elderly people was 77 million 40 per cent of whom were below poverty line, 55 per cent widows and 73 per cent illiterate and dependent on physical labour, Barnala said.
It is expected that by 2040, 324 million Indians would be above 60 years of age, he noted. He applauded HelpAge India for its continued effort to safeguard the dignity of the elderly and foster the welfare and needs of the aged.
Indrani Rajadurai, director - Souther Region Help Age India, said, 'The organisation is running 53 mobile medical units across the country including three units in Tamilnadu'. She said, 'a toll-free elders helpline '1253' has received a total of 1547 calls and shelter assistance was given to 145 elders, medical assistance to seven and 41 missing elders were traced out.'
The helpline is a great support for elders and for public who wanted to get information on age-care support services. On the tsunami rehabilitation, she said, "we have given medical assistance to 25,000 people and relief operations to 14,948 elders."
Later, the Governor released a Tamil version of 'Senior Citizen Guide' and presented cheque to HelpAge India's tsunami rehabilitation programmes.
