Faces Eviction Over 3 Inch Bit Of Land
LONDON (THE MIRROR), May 9, 2005 : A pensioner who won a legal battle over this three-inch strip of land fears she will lose her home because she can’t afford court costs.
Milica Markos, 74, was ordered to pay neighbour Alan Goodfellow £12,000 despite a judge ruling he wrongly knocked her fence down and built a concrete drive on her land to give him more room.
Now she faces eviction from the £280,000 four-bedroom house within days unless she coughs up.
Devastated Milica, who has lived in the home for 30 years, said: “When I heard I had to sell it I collapsed and smashed my head and had to go to hospital.
“I am worried about what will happen to me. I am being pushed out and I have no where to go. This is making me very ill.”
Her row with Mr Goodfellow began in February 1999 when he demolished the fence in her garden at Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.
She took him to court and in January 2003 a judge ordered her neighbour to tear up the concrete on the three-inch by 15ft piece of land and rebuild the fence.
Her son Nicholas said: “We can’t understand how she won the case but was ordered to pay all the costs, it doesn’t make sense.
“This is wrong. She can’t afford to pay. Mum is worried sick. We’re expecting bailiffs any day.”
Mr Goodfellow’s solicitors warned they would apply for an eviction order to cover the costs unless she paid up by last month.
