IRELAND: Antioxidants combat effects of old age

DUBLIN (U.TV News), May 6, 2005: Scientists have created dramatically longer living and healthier mice by boosting levels of an antioxidant in their bodies with genetic engineering, it was revealed.

The research could pave the way to treatments that may extend the lifespan of humans, and combat the diseases of old age.

The findings lend support to the "free radical" theory of ageing, which says the harmful effects of old age are largely due to highly reactive, destructive molecules.

When these free radicals attack other molecules they can have a serious impact at the cellular level, damaging cell components and DNA.

Some experts believe free radicals contribute in a major way to heart disease, cancer and other age-related diseases.

The theory also suggests that if the body was sufficiently protected from free radicals, age-related diseases could be tamed and people made to live longer.
