BANGLADESH: Tk 2600 million earmarked for old-age allowance

MADARIPUR, Bangladesh (The New Age), January 21, 2005:

The social welfare minister, Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mojahid, said the government will distribute Tk 260.37 crore among 13.15 lakh distressed elderly people across the country during the current fiscal.

He said this on Thursday while speaking at two separate programmes organised for distributing allowances among the elderly people in Madaripur.

The minister distributed allowances worth Taka 16,99,335 among 3,433 people. Each of the beneficiaries received Taka 495 in the first phase.

Beneficiaries from 18 unions and one pourasabha received their allowances in the district, an official handout said.

Mujahid called upon the officials, union parishad chairmen, members and other public representatives concerned to play an important role in distributing the allowance.

He also warned all concerned that the government would take stern measures if any irregularities are found in distribution of old age allowance.

‘Elderly people play a vital role in maintaining family bondage,’ Mojahid said, adding that old age allowance has a unique contribution in preserving the country’s family tradition strong and increasing the honour and dignity of the elderly people.

The director general of the department of social welfare, Hafizul Islam Miah, the deputy commissioner of Madaripur, Akram Hossain, the BNP district unit convenor, Humayun Kabir Khan, the Jamaat district ameer, Abdus Sobhan Khan, and the officials concerned were present.
