USA: Helping Seniors With Health Information

COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA (The State), December 23, 2004:

Here are suggestions from Debbie Yoho, who heads the Greater Columbia Literacy Council:

• United Way of the Midlands supports literacy programs in Richland, Lexington, Newberry and Fairfield counties. Health literacy classes for patients and/or medical providers are offered periodically in Richland and Newberry.

• Seniors who have trouble understanding medical information may benefit from having a friend or relative go with them to appointments to help keep track of questions and instructions.

• One program (www.AskMe3.org) suggests three simple questions people can ask their doctors: What is my main problem? What do I need to do? Why is it important for me to do this?

• Compartmentalized pill boxes can help seniors keep track of their medications.

• Health care providers can be sensitive to patients with low health literacy by speaking clearly, having patients repeat information to make sure they understand it, and putting written materials in easy-to-understand language.

• Help should be provided for patients who have trouble understanding and filling out medical forms. © 2004 The State.
