CHESTER: December 9, 2004:
In a culture where we are focused on youth, productivity and physical attractiveness - all attributes of a person's sexual image - seniors are not regarded as a part of that equation. In fact, seniors who are sexually active are considered "dirty old men" and "horny old broads."
But the reality is quite different.
Guests of this program were Dee Weaver and Linda Goodhart, both veteran nursing professionals affiliated with Planned Parenthood of Chester County.
Their comments set the record straight.
Referring to a recent study from the Kinsey Institute, it is apparent that while the frequency and ability to perform sexually will decline modestly as seniors experience the normal psychological and physiological changes associated with aging, the majority of individuals over sixty remain sexually active.
Nurses Weaver and Goodhart cited a recent study from the Kinsey Institute referenced to the work of Stephanie A. Sanders, Ph. D., Associate Director of the Sexual Research Division of the Kinsey Institute, who found that "the majority of men and women between the ages of 50 and 80 are still enthusiastic about sex and intimacy."
Willetta Silva, host of Senior Moments, added these observations from Dr. Walter M. Bortz, 70, professor at Stanford Medical School and past president of the American Geriatric Society and co-chair of the American Medical Association's Task Force on Aging:
"Use it or lose it, . . if you stay interested, stay healthy, stay off medications, and have a good marriage then you can have good sex all the way to the end of life...There is strong data all over: it's a matter of survival. People that have sex live longer. Married people live longer.
People need people. The more intimate the connection, the more powerful the effects".
