SAN LUIS (San Luis Obispo Tribune), August 30, 2004:
Work Training Programs has been awarded a $547,273 grant from the national nonprofit Senior Service America to provide job training and job placement services to low-income senior citizens.
It's called the "Senior AIDES program," and part of the Senior Community Service Employment Program under Title V of the Older Americans Act.
It would help place seniors in jobs with local nonprofit and governmental organizations.
Work Training Programs already has a history of serving the senior population, said Cindy Burton, its executive director and chief administrative officer for San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties.
"This grant will allow us to expand on the services we currently provide to seniors while demonstrating to the benefits of hiring older workers," she said.
The program already has participants lined up through its outreach to senior groups and referrals from friends and families.
Work Training Programs, Inc., established in 1964, is a nonprofit group that provides adult job training and independent living services to people who have developmental and physical disabilities.
The group serves about 1,800 people in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles counties.
