BEIRUT (THE DAILY STAR), July 31, 2004:
President Emile Lahoud inaugurated the first military old- age home in Kaslik on Friday; the first step in an endeavor which he had initiated when he was army commander.
"It is yet another step in the path toward providing social welfare and a safe, dignified life for the elderly," he said. Lahoud also said another step would be taken in that direction during the next Cabinet session, which is due to examine the retirement funds project law.
The rest house in Kaslik is the first in a series of military retirement homes which the army hopes to open. The idea for the centers was reportedly initiated by Lahoud several years ago, in an effort to provide help to officers and soldiers after their retirement.
Also attending the inauguration ceremony were Defense Minister Mahmoud Hammoud and Army Commander Michel Sleiman. Copyright (c) 2005 The Daily Star
