Shahrbanou Mazandarani, 97, was pulled out from under her home's rubble, eight days after the earthquake.
BAM, Iran (Canadian TV), January 4, 2004:
After being pulled out of her home's rubble eight days after an earthquake levelled Bam, Iran, 97-year-old Shahrbanou Mazandarani asked for tea -- then complained it was too hot. "God kept me alive," she told reporters after her dramatic rescue. Doctors say the woman is in good condition, despite having spent eight days trapped in the wreckage. A low metabolism typical of the elderly helped her pull through, one doctor said.
Sniffer dogs located the woman, found wrapped in a blanket. She says she hid under a table and breathed through a pipe.
"It's a miracle," said Red Crescent worker Abdollah Moundehali. "She had been half-sheltered in a corner by a bit of wood that toppled on top of her."
There had been no survivors found in the quake zone since Thursday, when three people were rescued. Experts say it is extremely unlikely anyone would survive beyond three days without water in such conditions.
