JAPAN: Noh flutist treasure Daigoro Fujita, 92, dies

TOKYO (The Japan Times - Kyodo News) November 16, 2008 Daigoro Fujita, a famed flutist for traditional noh theater who was recognized as a living national treasure, died Saturday of old age at his home in Tokyo, his family said. He was 92. After debuting in 1929, Fujita, who belonged to the Isso school of noh flutists, in 1971 he first noh flute player to win the honor, being recognized as a living national treasure by the government in the process Fujita, a Tokyo native, became a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1986 and was named a person of cultural merit by the government in 2005.
