CHINA: Parental Care - Chinese Style

BEIJING (BBC News), April 10, 2007:

Officials in the central Chinese province of Changyuan have approved new rules that mean government employees' chances of promotion will now depend in part on how they treat their parents.

For thousands of years being a good son or daughter has been an important part of Chinese culture.

This might be good news for mum and dad but it's also being seen as another important reminder that China's leaders are worried about supporting the country's ageing population.

In China parental care is taken seriously.

World Update caught up with two young Chinese workers: journalist Chen Hong and translator Wu Anjing. Both left their families and hometowns to pursue careers and earn better salaries in Beijing. First of all we asked Wu Anjing how does she look after her parents, Chinese style?

"According to Chinese tradition, taking care of parents is like eating and sleeping everyday. You take care of your parents so that when you are old your children can take care of you." Wu Anjing.
